We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Pamela (Pam) Tamkin's remarkable 30-year journey with Toward Maximum Independence (TMI)! Pam has demonstrated an unwavering dedication and commitment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She has made a profound impact in the life of our client, June, who has cerebral palsy and is with our Supported Living (SL) program. While June has been Pam's SL roommate for more than 20 years, June is and always will be a part of Pam's family.
Aligning Values
Pam's path to TMI was driven by a deep desire to help others. As a single mother when she started with TMI, she sought a career that aligned with her passion while also allowing her to be present for her son. TMI provided the perfect opportunity to do both. Little did she know, her journey would span three decades and transform June's life along with her own!
Unforgettable Moments and Rewarding Experiences
When asked about her most memorable moments, Pam fondly recalls the opening of the TMI "Unforgettables" retail store which she operated for many years but is now closed. Teaching our clients how to use the register, manage the store, and provide customer service was a truly rewarding experience that empowered our clients with valuable skills and fostered independence.
Positive Change and Growth
Over the years, Pam has witnessed significant positive changes at TMI and within the lives of our clients. She's proud of TMI's continuous growth and expansion, allowing us to support an increasing number of individuals. She's also seen firsthand how TMI's services have enriched our clients' lives socially and emotionally.
Lessons Learned and Personal Impact
Working with individuals with developmental disabilities has taught Pam invaluable lessons, most notably the importance of patience. She emphasizes the mutual growth and learning that has occurred over the years, stating, "I have gained insight as much as my clients have. June has grown and had a good life and so have I." Her work at TMI has been a deeply personal journey, shaping her life in profound ways and contributing to the growth of her own family.
Hopes for the Future
Pam's vision for the future is one of continued innovation and support. She praises TMI's creative approaches to helping individuals live meaningful lives and hopes that the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) will continue to explore new avenues for supporting clients in their homes.
Outside of TMI
Beyond her dedication to TMI, Pam is a creative soul with a passion for the arts. She used to teach art and enjoys painting and crafting in her free time.
Inspiring Influences
Pam acknowledges the profound influence of her sister, Connie, the co-founder of TMI, who was a passionate advocate for individuals with disabilities. She also expresses gratitude for TMI support staff, Dan and JoAnn, whose additional support and care for June provides invaluable peace of mind.
Thank You, Pam!
Thirty years of service is an incredible milestone. Pam's dedication, compassion, and commitment to TMI's mission have made a lasting impact. We are truly grateful for her contributions and honored to have her as part of the TMI family. Thank you to Pam for taking a moment to reflect and share her experiences, memories, and hopes for the future with us!
