Take Political Action

Services for people with disabilities are largely government funded. In the current era of economic downturns, government financial problems, and budget shortfalls, people with disabilities, many of whom are quite poor, are an easy political target for service reductions.

Because of this, Toward Maximum Independence urges its supporters to make their voices heard in the political process. Getting to know your government representatives and their staff members, educating them about the needs of those with disabilities, about the consequences of funding cuts being considered, the necessity of funding increases, the need for new program areas, and contacting them when key decisions are about to be made in Washington or Sacramento, all of these are essential to political action on behalf of people with disabilities.
